What Is a Photocell?

Photocell is a light-sensitive electrical control that turns an outdoor lighting circuit on at dusk and off at daylight. The device senses surrounding brightness through a photosensor, then signals a switch or control component. Photocells help automate landscape lights, security fixtures, wall packs, and other exterior lighting without daily manual operation.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • Light sensing separates a photocell from a standard wall switch.
  • Placement affects when the connected fixture activates.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

A photocell changes its electrical behavior as surrounding light changes. Its photosensor detects daylight or darkness, and an internal switching part controls power to the connected fixture. The control point may be built into a wall pack, mounted on a junction box, or installed as a separate device near an outdoor light.

Placement has a direct effect on operation. A nearby porch light can shine back onto the sensor and cause unwanted cycling, while shade from a roof or landscaping can delay activation. A motion sensor responds to movement, but a photocell responds to ambient light. Outdoor lighting systems may use both controls when the design calls for light only during darkness and activation when someone approaches.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we work on outdoor lighting, we check the photocell location, wiring, and switching response as one system. We also look for nearby fixtures or obstructions that can affect the sensor. Our team tests operation through the control and confirms that the connected lighting responds as intended.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner has a wall-mounted light beside a garage that should operate after sunset. An electrician installs a photocell where the sensor receives open daylight, then checks that the light responds without glare from the fixture affecting the control.
