What Is a Single-Pole Switch?

A single-pole switch is a wall-mounted control that opens or closes one electrical circuit from one location. The switch commonly controls a light fixture, exhaust fan, or other load. Its toggle has on and off positions, and the device is designed for circuits where one switching point controls the connected equipment.

Key Takeaways About Single-Pole Switch

  • One switch location controls the connected load.
  • The toggle provides clear on and off positions.
  • A single-pole switch is not a three-way switch.

How Single-Pole Switch Works

A man in a workshop screws a wall switch onto a plate beside a computer monitor and tools

A single-pole switch controls current by opening or closing the ungrounded conductor in a branch circuit. Pressing the toggle to the on position closes the path, allowing the connected load to operate. Moving the toggle to the off position opens the path and stops normal current flow to the load.

Installers connect the incoming circuit conductor to one switch terminal and the switched conductor to the other. The grounding conductor connects to the switch grounding point and the box when required by the installation. A three-way switch uses a different wiring arrangement because two switch locations control one load. A single-pole switch applies when one wall location provides that control.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we inspect a single-pole switch, we identify the line and load conductors before disconnecting the device. Our team checks terminal connections, grounding, box condition, and the connected load. We also confirm that the replacement switch matches the circuit and installation conditions.

Single-Pole Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants one wall switch to control a hallway light from one location. During light switch installation, the electrician replaces the existing device with a compatible single-pole switch and checks the connections before testing the light.
