What Is a Three-Way Switch?

A three-way switch is a wall switch arrangement that controls one light or fixture from two separate locations. Each switch works with the other through traveler wires, so either location can change the light's state. This setup is common in hallways, stairways, and rooms with more than one entrance.

Key Takeaways About Three-Way Switch

  • Two switch locations control one light.
  • Traveler wires connect the switches.
  • A three-way switch is not a standard single-pole switch.

How Three-Way Switch Works

A person tightens a light switch on a wall while a laptop sits blurred on a desk

A three-way switch uses two switches connected by traveler wires. Each switch has a common terminal and traveler terminals. Power enters the circuit through one common terminal, while the other common terminal sends power toward the light fixture.

Moving either switch changes which traveler carries power. That change opens or completes the lighting path, so the light responds from either location. The arrangement does not mean that one switch has three on or off positions. A single-pole switch controls a light from one location, while a three-way arrangement coordinates two locations.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we inspect a three-way switch, we identify the common terminal and trace the traveler wires before replacing parts. We also check connections at both switch boxes because a loose terminal or misidentified wire can affect control from either location. Our team verifies operation from both locations after the light switch repair.

Three-Way Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A hallway light may need control near the entry and near the bedrooms. A three-way switch arrangement lets someone turn the light on at one location and turn it off at the other.
