What Is Thermal Imaging?

Thermal Imaging is a diagnostic method that displays surface temperature patterns as an image. An infrared camera detects heat emitted by electrical equipment and shows warmer areas for inspection. Electricians use these patterns to locate possible loose connections, overloaded components, damaged conductors, or uneven loading without removing every cover.

Key Takeaways About Thermal Imaging

  • It shows heat patterns, not a direct view of internal wiring.
  • Unusual warmth can guide further electrical testing.
  • An infrared camera is not the same as a basic temperature gun.

How Thermal Imaging Works

Two workers study a thermal camera screen showing a bright heat pattern inside an electrical panel

Thermal imaging uses an infrared camera to detect heat energy at the surface of electrical equipment. The camera converts differences in detected heat into a visible image, often called a thermal picture. Warmer areas stand out from nearby areas with similar operating conditions.

During an inspection, an electrician compares related components and looks for an unusual pattern. A warm connection may suggest resistance at a terminal, while a warmer conductor may point to a load issue. The image does not identify the exact fault by itself. Further testing with an electrical meter and a visual inspection help determine the cause.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we use thermal imaging during an electrical inspection, we scan accessible panels, disconnects, and other energized equipment when conditions allow. We compare related parts and follow unusual heat patterns with visual checks and electrical testing. We treat the camera image as a diagnostic clue, not a complete diagnosis.

Thermal Imaging in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an electrical inspection, an infrared camera may show one breaker connection warmer than the other connections nearby. We then inspect the connection and test the circuit to determine whether the pattern relates to a loose termination, load condition, or another issue.
