What Is a Service Entrance?

A service entrance is the part of an electrical system that connects utility power to a building's main disconnect and service equipment. It includes the conductors, raceway, meter connection, grounding connection, and related equipment that carry power into the property. The service entrance establishes the point where utility supply becomes the building's electrical service.

Key Takeaways About Service Entrance

  • It connects utility power with the building's service equipment.
  • The service entrance includes conductors and grounding connections.
  • It is not the same as a branch circuit or load center.

How Service Entrance Works

Service entrance conductors carry electricity from the utility connection toward the building's main disconnect. The route may include overhead or underground conductors, a meter enclosure, conduit, and service equipment. The main disconnect provides a way to shut off power to the building's distribution system.

The service entrance also connects the electrical system to its grounding and bonding components. Those connections help establish a controlled path for fault current and support the correct relationship between grounded and ungrounded conductors. The exact arrangement depends on the utility connection, building design, and service equipment layout.

A load center distributes power to branch circuits after the service entrance reaches the main equipment. A grounding electrode connects the service system to the earth through an approved grounding point.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we assess a service entrance during an electrical panel upgrade, we inspect the conductors, terminations, meter equipment, disconnect, and grounding connections as one system. We also check whether the existing service entrance can support the planned panel and electrical load.

Service Entrance in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an electrical panel upgrade, a technician may find that the existing service entrance conductors do not match the new service equipment. The upgrade may require coordinated work on the conductors, disconnect, grounding path, and panel connection.
